Kakadu National Park

(Also some nice pictures of Kakadu and Arnhem Land on the NT Travel site)

A weekend off in June gave us the opportunity to go and check out the famous Kakadu National Park in East Arnhem Land. A beautiful and extensive park with great hikes, waterfalls, culture and rock art, amazing vistas, fishing, camping and a multitude of other amazing experiences.

Road to Kakadu

With MUCH delay here are finally some pictures of a great weekend of camping and touring with Felicia (thanks for some of your pics), Janice, Ben and Joe, and random other Flinders folk who showed up at the campsite next to us by coincidence.

Nourlangie Rock, Kakadu Escarpment and Aboriginal Art sites

With easy road access, Nourlangie Rock is a nice walk through great art and scenery.

More info on the Kakadu rock art on the website if you are interested.

Traditional foods at Ubirr art site - fish
& almangiyi (long-neck turtle)

Sunset over the Kakadu escarpment

Camping at Muirella Park

Nice campground with a billabong and good layout where we had little success at fishing :(, varying degrees of success at mounting tents... :p

and enjoyed the surprise arrival of other Flinders friends for evening entertainment and feasting on Ben's first barramundi camping catch. Mmmm...

Yellow Water Sunrise Cruise

A big part of the Kakadu experience is the bird and croc-filled Yellow Water cruises. Fantastic sunrise and a great experience watching the waking of a billabong.

Lots of birds such as magpie geese, jabirus, brolgas, jacanas, cranes, sea eagles, etc. And of course the important croc spotting...

Forest kingfisher

spot the bird and nest...

Ubirr

Another great site at sunset this time, this area has fantastic views over the floodplains and more great art sites.

Silly...

Gunlom Falls

Further south is Gunlom Falls with its long falls and cool waterhole, but which hides it's biggest surprise at the top of a steep climb to the top of the falls...

where a series of cascading falls and amazing rock holes make a fantastic swimming spot before the water tumbles down over the rock face to the pool below.

Looking forward over the falls above,
and back towards to the source below

A bit far for a timer shot swim, so arm length shots will have to do...

And that leaves us with sunset on the road home from a weekend where we enjoyed a great intro to Kakadu park.
